The Benefits Minimize

Property is expensive. It is therefore vital that organisations aim to get the most (and best) from their corporate space. To this end, property executives must consider how efficiently their buildings are being used and how changes in use and efficiency could impact on wider organisational objectives. IPD Occupiers ‘Space Code’ offers a good practice way to do just this!

Why is it needed? Because no global measurement standard currently exists. Rather, individual countries such as the UK, US and Netherlands each have their own national standards. While valuable in their own right, each uses differing terminology, definitions and so forth.

For large and global organisations this means it is almost impossible to generate consistent and reliable performance information about their estate. This inability to compare the performance of, say, UK buildings with US buildings makes effective property management extremely difficult.

By using the code property executives can better support their core business through: improved forward planning to meet business demands e.g. keeping pace with headcount or supporting a major change of strategic direction.  Better procurement - managers can set better, more detailed specifications for the procurement of new buildings / refurbishment of existing buildings.  In addition, the code assists in benchmarking as well as the comparing internal performance by enabling users to compare their relative performance against other Code-compliant organisations.
